How to connect smoke detectors

More smoke detectors on the market are built to work independently. However, some models hard-wired are built to work together, linked in a chain connected to a central alarm system. While this is a more elaborate settings than in most homes, the basic principles behind smoke detectors linked and current wiring used is relatively simple. Wiring can be done with basic tools.

Instructions

Turn off the power going to the smoke detector circuit in the alarm control panel.

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the red and black wires from the control panel, using a pair of pliers.

Loosen one (+) terminal screw and terminal (-) a block of input power of the smoke detector. There are two of each in the input block. Slide the Red wire into the (+) terminal and the black wire under the (-) terminal and tighten the screws.

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from both ends of the red and black wires leading from the first smoke detector to the second, with a pair of pliers.

Loosen the terminal screw and a (-) terminal that still has not used the smoke detector power input block. Slide the Red wire into the (+) terminal and the black wire into the (-) terminal. Tighten the screws.
