smoke detector types

Smoke alarms detect much faster than heat detectors fire. There are currently three types of smoke detectors in the market: ionization detector, combined by ionization and photoelectric detector.

Ionization smoke detector contains a small amount of radioactive material. The radiation passes through the ionization chamber which is full of air between two electrodes and a small constant electric current. Entering the smoke, the Chamber absorbs the alpha particles, reduces the ionization of the air and power is interrupted, causing the activation of the alarm. This type of alarm responsive to fires that burn out of control quickly.

Photoelectric smoke detectors operate using a light source, a collimation of the beam of light and a photosensitive device system. When smoke enters the optical camera and crosses the path of the light, the beam of light emitted is refracted in the particles of smoke, reaches the receiver and thus the alarm is activated. This type of alarm responsive to fires that spread slowly.

Combined smoke detectors have both technologies: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization smoke detectors respond more quickly to more intense fires that spread at great speed, while photoelectric detectors react better to less intense fires and lower speed of propagation. recommends using both smoke detectors for greater protection.

Heat detectors

Heat detectors are the oldest fire automatic detection devices. Heat detectors have a sensing element inside the unit that fires when it reaches a preset fixed temperature or when a specific temperature rise. Heat detectors are suitable for applications where the speed of detection is not the main factor or where environmental conditions would not allow the use of a smoke detector detection of fires in confined spaces where you can anticipate the flares that propagate themselves rapidly
Heat detectors have one lower false alarm rate but the detection rate of fire compared to the smoke detectors is also lower. Studies have shown that heat detectors are not as effective as smoke detectors to detect fires in residential housing.
