Iron- stony meteorites
Depending on the dominant composition of the substance of the meteorite are three main types of meteorites.
Stony meteorites – in a meteorite dominated by mineral material
iron meteorites – in a meteorite is dominated by the metal component
stony- iron meteorites – meteorite consists of mixed material
This is a traditional , classical classification is simple and convenient . However, modern scientific classification of meteorites is based on the division into groups, which are common in meteorites physical, chemical , isotopic, and mineralogical properties .

Stony meteorites
Stony meteorites (stony meteorites – Eng.) At first glance resemble terrestrial rocks. This is the most common type of meteorites ( about 93 % of all falls ) . There are two groups of stony meteorites : chondrites (the vast majority of 86%) and achondrites .
Chondrites contain a part of chondrules – spherical or elliptical education mainly of silicate composition:
olivine (Fe, Mg) 2 [SiO4] – ( fayalite Fe2 [SiO4] and forsterite Mg2 [SiO4])
pyroxene (Fe, Mg) 2Si2O6 – ( ferrosilit Fe2Si2O6 and enstatite Mg2Si2O6)
In Achondrites chondrules are absent. Found that the achondrites are fragments of planets and asteroids , meteorites from Mars, for example , and the moon are Achondrites . The structure and composition of the stone meteorites similar to terrestrial basalts. Achondrites are fairly common type of meteorites (about 8 % of all known meteorites ) .
Stony meteorites contain inclusions of nickel- iron (usually no more than 20 % by weight ), and the other meteorite metal. According to experts the age of stony meteorites some 4.5 billion years old.
iron meteorites
Iron meteorites (iron meteorites – Eng.) Composed mainly of a metal mixture ( alloy ) of iron and nickel in various proportions , as well as they have to include other elements and minerals , but they seldom have more than 20% by mass (about 6% downs ) . The Ni content in the iron meteorites ranges from 5 to 30 % and more.
This type of meteorite is most clearly responds to even an ordinary metal compactor . The break in the meteorite has a distinctive metallic luster. The bark has a melting point of gray or brown color, so visually distinguished from ordinary iron meteorite rock hard.
Iron- stony meteorites
Iron- stony meteorites (iron-stony meteorites – Eng.) Is a rare type of meteorite (about 1.5 % of falls ) . The composition of these meteorites is an intermediate position between the stone and iron meteorites. There are two groups of iron – stone meteorites : pallasites and mesosiderites .
Structure pallasite is translucent olivine (Fe, Mg) 2 [SiO4], enclosed in a matrix of iron and nickel. Pallasites on the fracture (broken ) have an attractive aesthetic appearance and are a welcome acquisition for collectors. The cost of these meteorites is in the range of $ 6 – $ 60 or more per gram of meteorite material .
Mesosiderites is a very rare type of meteorite (about 0.5 % of falls ) . The composition mesosiderites included roughly equal proportions of iron, nickel and silicate minerals such as pyroxene, olivine, feldspar .
